Overview

A residential property in Bispham Green, near Ormskirk, required a complete renovation of its wine cellar, which had become unusable due to significant water ingress. The cellar, originally designed for wine storage, suffered from persistent dampness caused by groundwater and leaks from the courtyard above. A comprehensive waterproofing and drainage solution was necessary to restore the cellar to a functional and dry condition.

The Challenge

The primary issue was water ingress through both the ground and the overlying courtyard, resulting in a persistently damp environment making the area completely unusable. There was no existing waterproofing system, and hydrostatic water pressure posed an ongoing threat to the integrity of the cellar. The challenge was to deliver a long-lasting, robust solution without compromising the structure or aesthetics of the property.

The Solution

To address the water ingress and manage groundwater pressure effectively, a Type C Cavity Drainage System was installed using high-performance Delta Membrane Systems products:

    • Delta MS 500 – Cavity Drainage Membrane:
Applied to the internal walls, floors and the vaulted ceiling of the wine cellar, Delta MS 500 provided a barrier against moisture while allowing water to drain freely behind the membrane. The 8mm studded HDPE design ensures a clear cavity, promoting efficient water movement and control. This system is ideal for both new builds and retrofit projects in damp or contaminated environments.
    • Delta Drainage Channel:
Installed at the wall-floor junctions, the Delta Channel managed and directed any water ingress to a suitable drainage point. Made from distinctive yellow PVC, the channel is designed to relieve hydrostatic pressure and forms a crucial part of the overall water management strategy.
  • Following application of the waterproofing system the walls were plaster boarded and skimmed and a water resistant chipboard floor was laid.

The Outcome

The renovation transformed the previously unusable, water-damaged wine cellar into a dry, functional, and safe environment for wine storage. The cavity drainage system ensures ongoing protection against water ingress, significantly enhancing the property’s value and utility. The homeowner now enjoys peace of mind, knowing that their wine collection is securely stored in a professionally waterproofed space.
