Overview
RTC is proud to have contributed technical expertise, specialist knowledge, and hands-on support to a remarkable project featured on the BBC One series DIY SOS: The Big Build and on BBC’s North-West News. This initiative aimed to complete the transformation of Canada Street in Newton Heath, Manchester, into a supportive community for ex-servicemen and women.
This particular episode focused on creating a safe, spacious, and comfortable home for Simon Flores, a former soldier and single parent, who lost his lower left leg while serving with The Rifles in Iraq in 2006. RTC was honoured to be part of a team that brought together skilled professionals and volunteers for a cause that truly matters.
The Challenge
In just 10 days, the DIY SOS team set out to transform two adjacent, empty properties into a single, fully accessible, three-bedroom home. The primary challenge was ensuring the new home would be dry, comfortable, and suitable for long-term family living, particularly important due to the unique requirements of the resident and the property’s age and condition.
The presence of dampness was a significant concern, and the home required expert intervention to mitigate any existing issues and prevent future moisture-related problems that could impact the health and comfort of the family.
The Solution
RTC was selected as the contractor of choice to manage and install a specialist membrane system supplied by Delta Membrane Systems Ltd. This advanced system was applied to the internal walls to provide a permanent, dry, and damp-free living environment.
Our involvement included:
- Three days of on-site work by our highly trained and qualified technicians.
- Installation of a Delta Membrane System to combat dampness effectively.
- Technical consultation and advice on other moisture-risk areas throughout the property.
This system ensured long-term protection against water ingress and contributed significantly to the structural health and overall comfort of the new home.
The Outcome
The successful completion of the project resulted in a warm, secure, and dry family home tailored to meet the needs of Simon Flores and his three young children. Importantly, the two young boys who previously shared a room with their sister now have their own individual spaces, something they can enjoy throughout their childhood and beyond.
The collaboration between DIY SOS, RTC, Delta Membrane Systems, and many other dedicated professionals made a lasting impact on this deserving family’s life. For RTC, it was a privilege to be part of a project that combined community spirit, technical excellence, and real-life transformation.
“It was an absolute pleasure for all of us at RTC to be able to offer support and advice for such a worthy cause.”
